Ms Nieves, Legacy's amazing theater teacher, recently benefited from an item she picked up at the free teacher store, A Gift for Teaching. Please read the thank you letter she shared with them to hear about the creativity of our theater students and the useful supplies provided by A Gift for Teaching.
Dear A Gift for Teaching Team,
I wasn’t sure who specifically to address this to, but I wanted to share a success story regarding the supplies you provide and the incredible impact they have on our classrooms across OCPS.
My name is Osmary Nieves, and I am the Middle School Theater Teacher at Legacy Middle School. Because of the nature of theater, I often struggle to find traditional supplies and frequently find myself hunting for unique building materials. In the past, I’ve made great use of the fabric in your donation area, as well as paint, glue, and tie-dye, but my most recent "find" was truly special.
I recently collected a large amount of rectangular packing foam from your shop. Initially, I hoped to use it for a puppetry unit, but it didn't quite fit that project. However, later that week, while my students were designing set pieces (walls) for our production of Disney’s Descendants: The Musical, a student had a spark of inspiration: "Why don’t we paint the foam to look like brick walls?"
Over the next three weeks, my classes worked together to transform that foam into a realistic brick set. We also used brown paint that was mostly sourced from A Gift for Teaching.
I have attached pictures of the process from the beginning to the final product so you can see the result!
Please feel free to share this story. It’s a perfect reminder that items we think have no purpose can be completely transformed with a little creativity. Your donations help to fill the gaps in our classrooms. Thank you for all you do for our teachers and students.
Best regards,
Miss Nieves
