Legacy Middle School's Community Newsletter

We are a proud B school.

Principal's Message

Greetings, Jets!

As Orange County Schools weigh enrollment strategies, we want to remind everyone of the incredible turnaround Legacy Middle School has achieved. From high-quality academics to a wide range of clubs, electives, and extracurricular programs, Legacy is now a place where students thrive and families feel proud.

We know that 32 families in our zone are currently homeschooling, and we encourage you to spread the word: enrolling at Legacy means more than just attending school—it means joining a community that has raised its standards and continues to grow stronger.

When all families zoned for Legacy come together, the benefits ripple outward: students gain richer experiences, the school builds momentum, and property values rise as our neighborhood schools flourish. Legacy Middle School is not just a building—it’s the institution we hold dear, the place where our children learn, grow, and discover their passions. By encouraging every family to be part of this journey, we solidify the foundation of excellence and community pride that makes Legacy unique.

Here’s how you can help:
  • Talk to neighbors and friends who homeschool about the positive changes at Legacy.
  • Share your own family’s experiences with Legacy’s programs, electives, and supportive environment.
  • Advocate for the importance of a strong community school where every child has access to opportunities that prepare them for success.

We value your input! Please take a moment to share your feedback by completing the School Start Time Survey using the link below.

This year, families have two opportunities to receive holiday food donations through local community events. Details for each event can be found in this edition of Jets in Action.

Our next round of assessments is less than a month away! During the first week of December, students will take the PM2 FAST ELA and Math assessments, followed by Common Final Exams. Please review our testing calendar dates and ensure that your child is present.

Have a great week!

School Start Times Survey

Beginning Tuesday, November 11, 2025, Orange County Public Schools invites all families and community members to participate in the School Start Times Survey to help the district decide whether to change school start times for High Schools and Elementary Schools. Your participation is important because it ensures all our families’ voices are heard in this process.

Florida Statute mandates that school districts set middle and high school start times later in the morning, unless the district can provide a report including how their students, employees, families, and community members feel about the change.

Research stresses the importance of middle and high school students getting enough sleep, and moving high school start times to later in the morning may help. The change would also mean that elementary students would start later in the morning than high school and middle school students, which could present challenges for our community.

You will receive a Parent Square email or text with the link to the survey. You can also use the QR code below. Please take a moment to answer the questions. The family survey is available in English, Spanish (Español), Portuguese (Português), Haitian Creole (Kreyòl), Vietnamese (Tiếng Việt), and Arabic (عربي).
The survey begins November 11, 2025, and closes on November 21, 2025.

For additional information on changes to school schedules and scientific research on adequate sleep for middle and high school students, click here.

The survey is anonymous, which means no one will know how you answered the questions, so please provide honest, thoughtful feedback.
For additional questions or information, please email Jason Jimenez @ jason.jimenez@ocps.net.

Important Safety Reminder

E-Scooter and E-Bike Safety Awareness

E-Scooters and E-Bikes have become a common mode of transportation for many students across Orange County. With this increase in use, OCPS has seen a rise in accidents involving students traveling to and from school on these devices.

If your students ride an E-Scooter or E-Bike to school, please take time to review safety procedures with them and ensure they understand the rules and regulations that apply. Safe riding practices help protect not only your student but also others on the road and sidewalks.

According to Florida Fire Prevention Code 10.10.2, anything considered a “Source of ignition” should remain outside of the school building. Lithium batteries that power these scooters are a source of ignition.

Attached are helpful resources, including:
• Florida Statutes §316.2065 (Bicycle Regulations) and §316.20655 (E-Bike Regulations)

Safety Reminders for Families:
• Helmets are strongly encouraged (and required by law for riders under 16).
• Riders should obey all traffic signals and posted signs.
• Riders should dismount their E-Scooter or E-Bike before crossing a crosswalk.
• E-Scooters and E-Bikes must follow the same rules as bicycles on the road.
• Devices should not be operated on school campuses unless specifically permitted.
• Students should never ride with multiple passengers unless the device is designed for it.
• Night riding requires lights and reflective gear for visibility.

If you have questions, please reach out to the Office of Occupational Safety and Health at OfficeofSafety@ocps.net

As PTA's Healthy Lifestyle Month continues we'd like to highlight Children's Grief Awareness Day on November 20th. It is estimated that 1 in 11 children experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18. But grief in childhood isn't limited to death. Children and adolescents may grieve due to divorce, incarceration, foster care placement, or other significant losses. Grief doesn't just affect children at home but can negatively impact learning.

Staff Spotlight - Mrs. Bedford

A smiling woman stands in a library, holding her stomach.
Ms. Bedford, an 8th grade pre-algebra teacher, loves math and taught some of her friends due to their love of math. Some teachers have many memorable experiences. Ms. Bedford’s favorite memorable moments are watching her students understand the concept and seeing many of her students grow. She loves to go to UHS to see many of her former students and goes to many high school events.

Teachers are very busy sometimes and sometimes need a vacation. Ms. Bedford states that her favorite vacation is Thailand. Although she's been there before, she loves experiencing their culture and visiting many places there as well as eating new foods. Over the years of teaching some teachers love a quote that always sticks with them. Ms. Bedford’s memorable quote is, “What you put your mind to, you can do.” Something Ms. Bedford would change about Legacy would be to bring everyone together into an even more connected community and take part together.

Autumn Headlines

On Monday, November 10th, our Orange County Public Library Liaison from the Chickasaw Branch collaborated with two of our ELA classes and the Journalism class to craft fictional Autumn-themed headlines and news stories. The creativity on display from our Legacy students was truly impressive!

  • Radioactive Shrimp Found at Walmart
  • Record-Breaking Hurricane Hits Florida - Shark Gets Launched into Man's Pool
  • Ratched Rocket Roller Coaster Left Pedestrians Dangling
  • The Great Pumpkin Smasher!
