Principal's Message

Greetings, Jets!

We’re thrilled to share that both of our soccer teams triumphed over Discovery last week! The boys' team delivered a strong 2–0 win, while the girls' team edged out a 1–0 victory. As the boys head into the playoffs, let’s keep the energy high and continue cheering them on!

Last week, Legacy had the privilege of hosting two inspiring guest presenters: Shawn Welcome, Orlando’s Poet Laureate, and performing artist Ada Pla Luz. We’re honored to have them share their talents with our students.

This Monday and Tuesday, students in Science, Civics, Algebra, and Geometry will be taking the PMA assessments. Please remind students that these are computer-adaptive tests, meaning the difficulty of each question adjusts based on the student's previous responses. Because of this, students should work through the test in order and avoid skipping around.

Finally, thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we’re helping our students grow, thrive, and shine!

Have a great week!

Jason Jiménez
Principal

Be a Teacher for a Day

We are excited to invite you to be part of this year’s Teach-In event. Each November, schools across the country welcome community members, professionals, and parents to help spark curiosity and broaden students’ horizons by sharing insights into careers, talents, and life experiences.

This year’s event will take place on Thursday, November 20th, and we would be honored to have you join us. Whether you’d like to give a presentation, lead an interactive activity, or simply share your journey, your involvement can leave a meaningful impression on our students.

Not planning to present but still want to contribute? We’re also seeking donations of food items or goody bag contents to show appreciation for our presenters.

Soccer Teams

Victory on the Field! ⚽️

Kudos to both of our soccer teams for their victories over Discovery last week! The boys dominated with a 2–0 win, while the girls secured a hard-fought 1–0 triumph. Let’s keep the momentum going and rally behind our boys' team as they head into the playoffs!

Poetry Workshop

with Shawn Welcome, Orlando's Poet Laureate

Creativity in Action!

Students from Ms. Zayas-Vargas’ Reading class, Ms. Nieves’ Drama class, and Ms. Haynes’ Journalism class took part in a dynamic Poetry Workshop led by Orlando’s Poet Laureate, Shawn Welcome. This engaging experience sparked creativity and self-expression among our students. The workshop concluded with a special field trip last Friday evening to the Celebrating Hispanic Voices performance at the Dr. Phillips Center—an honor, as Legacy is one of only three middle schools invited to attend. Adding to the excitement, three of our students had the opportunity to share their voices by reading original poems live on stage.

CPR Training in PE Classes

This week in PE, students learned life-saving skills by participating in CPR training. They practiced proper techniques for chest compressions and learned how to respond in emergency situations. It was a valuable and empowering experience that emphasized the importance of being prepared to help others.

Spotlight on Digital Tools

📚 Empowering Student Readers and Researchers!
Last week, Ms. Haynes kicked off a series of engaging visits to ELA classrooms, introducing students to the powerful digital resources available in the Library Research Tools Folder on Launchpad. These tools are designed to support both academic research and recreational reading:
  • 🔍 Florida Electronic Library (FEL/Gale): A trusted source for research and reference materials
  • 📖 Follett Destiny: Explore our school library catalog and dive into eBooks and audiobooks
  • 🎧 Sora: Access a wide selection of eBooks, audiobooks, and digital magazines
  • 📈 Beanstack: Track reading minutes and build healthy reading habits
Reading Rewards! To spark even more excitement around reading, we’re launching a monthly incentive program. Students who log their reading minutes in Beanstack will be eligible for fun rewards and recognition. It’s a great way to celebrate literacy and encourage a lifelong love of books—one page at a time!

So far, we've logged over 20,000 minutes toward our 100,000-minute goal—let’s keep the momentum going!

🌞 SSYRA Battle of the Books Club

📚 Great news—our SSYRA books are here!

On Tuesday, October 7th, Ms. Haynes will host an interest meeting for the Battle of the Books Club in the Media Center during all lunch periods. If you're excited to dive into this year's SSYRA titles and enjoy a little friendly competition, come learn more about the club and how you can get involved!

Important Safety Reminder

E-Scooter and E-Bike Safety Awareness

E-Scooters and E-Bikes have become a common mode of transportation for many students across Orange County. With this increase in use, OCPS has seen a rise in accidents involving students traveling to and from school on these devices.

If your students ride an E-Scooter or E-Bike to school, please take time to review safety procedures with them and ensure they understand the rules and regulations that apply. Safe riding practices help protect not only your student but also others on the road and sidewalks.

Attached are helpful resources, including:
• Florida Statutes §316.2065 (Bicycle Regulations) and §316.20655 (E-Bike Regulations)

Safety Reminders for Families:
• Helmets are strongly encouraged (and required by law for riders under 16).
• Riders should obey all traffic signals and posted signs.
• Riders should dismount their E-Scooter or E-Bike before crossing a crosswalk.
• E-Scooters and E-Bikes must follow the same rules as bicycles on the road.
• Devices should not be operated on school campuses unless specifically permitted.
• Students should never ride with multiple passengers unless the device is designed for it.
• Night riding requires lights and reflective gear for visibility.

If you have questions, please reach out to the Office of Occupational Safety and Health at OfficeofSafety@ocps.net
