Principal's Message

Greetings, Jets!

Our students were off to a great start after the Labor Day weekend. Teachers will begin submitting progress report grades this week, and progress reports will be available on Skyward starting on Thursday, September 18th. Take a moment and review the information highlighted in this edition. We appreciate your support of Legacy Middle School!

📝 FAST Testing Begins This Week - Round one of FAST testing kicks off this week. To help students perform their best, please make sure they:
  • Get a full night’s sleep
  • Eat a healthy breakfast
  • Arrive on time and ready to focus

Remind your child to take their time and that they should not skip around to other questions, but should answer all questions in sequential order. See the section below about Computer Adaptive Testing.

📧 All students received an email sent to their student Gmail account with their scores from last year. Please take a moment and review this email with your child and encourage your child to do their very best on testing this week.

Thank you for your continued support in helping our students succeed!

FAST Testing

Computer Adaptive Testing

Florida's statewide testing is Computer Adaptive. This means that students should answer every question in sequential order. Students should not be encouraged to jump around, or skip to another question with computer adaptive testing.

  • We often ask the students to justify their response. Why is it B? Why is it not A, C, or D? This activity is one where students use process of elimination using a logical sequencing of ideas.
  • Chances are that the harder the questions get for your child with computer adaptive testing, the better they are performing!

Parental Consent Form

Permission to Attend Legacy Middle Activities and Events

Parents, please fill out this form to indicate whether or not you approve of your child attending, participating in, and experiencing any activities Legacy Middle School plans for our students' entertainment, experience, and learning opportunities both during and after school through the end of the school year. If you would like your child to opt out of any upcoming events or activities, please indicate which activities in the last question of this form.

Per Florida Rule 6A-10.089, we are required to obtain parental consent regarding all school-sponsored events and activities.

Some of our upcoming events and activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Honor Roll Assemblies
  • Teach-In, November
  • Prism, December
  • Author Visits

We know that our community appreciates efficiency. That's why we're providing you with one form for the rest of this school year to consolidate and streamline parental consent forms like we did last year. This will benefit you so you will not be inundated with multiple requests.

The OCPS Parental Consent for Student Participation in School-Sponsored Events, Activities, and Student Clubs can be found in the link here:   General Parent Consent Form

Ms. Ladino's Science Class

Students in Ms. Ladino‘s 6th grade science class take notes on the comparison of scientific law versus scientific theory. This introductory phase of instruction provides students with the foundational skills for a scientific inquiry.

Mr. Connor's Gifted Studies Class

JAWS made waves in 1975, changing how the world saw sharks—but we’re not here to scare anyone. In Legacy Middle School’s new Gifted Studies elective, students dive into hands-on projects like designing a mechanical shark inspired by Bruce, the iconic animatronic from the film.

🦈✨ “All this student needed was a shark… with a laser beam attached to its head!”
Inspired by Austin Powers and powered by creativity, Brody Miller showcases his jaw dropping shark creation, lasers and all.

This is just one example of how Legacy is expanding opportunities to meet the diverse needs of our learners. Gifted Studies is here—and it’s jaw-some! 😄🦈💡

Welcome to the Library!

📚 Library Adventures Begin in ELA!
This week, our ELA classes continued their visits to the school library with an engaging orientation session and the chance to check out new books. In addition to physical books, students can dive into digital reading through the Sora app, accessible via Launchpad.

To make reading even more exciting, we’re launching a monthly incentive program! Students who log their reading minutes in the Beanstack app will be eligible for special rewards. Let’s celebrate the joy of reading—one page at a time!

📖 Discover Digital Reading with Sora

Students can now enjoy a vast library of eBooks—including graphic novels and magazines—through the Sora app, conveniently available on Launchpad. These digital titles are accessible anytime, anywhere, on any device, making reading more flexible and fun than ever!

📘 Track Reading Progress with Beanstack

Students can stay motivated and organized with Beanstack, a Launchpad app designed to enhance their reading journey. With Beanstack, they can log their reading minutes, join exciting challenges, and keep a running list of all the books they explore throughout the school year. It’s a fun and interactive way to build strong reading habits!

SSYRA Books 2025-2026

🌞 What Is the Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA)?
Each year, Florida Media Specialists carefully select the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Book List to help spark a love of reading in students across the state. These books are chosen not only for their literary quality and engaging stories, but also for their variety—ranging across genres, cultures, and curriculum connections.

The goal? To encourage children to read for pleasure and build strong reading fluency in the process. Whether your child is into mysteries, graphic novels, or heartfelt tales, there’s something on the SSYRA list to capture their imagination.

Parent Teacher Student Association

September is PTA Membership Month!

Legacy Middle School PTSA celebrates our Members this September for PTA Membership Month!

Thank you for 128 years of support in helping PTA/PTSA advocate for and support children, families, and teachers!

If you haven't joined yet please consider joining to help us continue to support our programs, teachers, and social events here at Legacy and throughout the community and nation.

Membership does not require volunteering or dedicating time to PTSA. It allows the association to bridge the gap between students, staff, and families through communication, programs, and events.

At Legacy Middle School we have a great opportunity to include the students in our decision making process. We are a Parent Teacher Student Association. Students are also encouraged to join and represent the students in our meetings.

You can join at https://legacymiddle.givebacks.com/shop or use the QR code.

We look forward to a fun and engaging school year.

Delayed dismissal 30/30

Patience is key during delayed dismissal

The weather can be very unpredictable the first few months of the school year. Cloudy skies and rain is not a signal of a delayed dismissal. We will only call a delayed dismissal should our dismissal procedures be impacted by lightning in our area. Families, please realize that our student and staff safety is our top priority. We understand that the weather is an inconvenience; however, we all choose to live in the lightning capital of the world. Please do not double park or impede another family from entering or exiting campus. Should you need to arrive on campus to pick up your child during a delayed dismissal, please follow the schematic below. You'll enter through the car loop doors, sign your child out in the cafeteria, and exit out on the east side of the cafeteria. Thank you.

30-30 Rule for Inclement Weather

The 30-30 Rule

For our families new to Legacy, at dismissal and no sooner, please note that during times of inclement weather, we follow the nationally recognized '30/30 Rule'. If thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes have passed from the last sound of thunder. Parents may arrive on campus to sign out their child.
